What We're Learning:

Reading:

We will continue our reader's workshop model with whole group and small groups focusing on story structure. We will continue our thoughts on beginning, middle, and end and how they might not all be the same chunk of the story. We will work to identify sections of stories and focus how although they may not be the same length, they are all equally important to the story! We will also practice how good readers pay attention to how characters change throughout these different parts of our stories.

Writing/Grammar:

We are continuing our exciting walk into writer's workshop and becoming more independent writers. Our focus for writing this week will continue with personal narratives. We are the experts on events that happened in our lives. We will focus on expanding our vocabulary with vibrant verbs and adverbs.

We will also begin our first spelling list this week!

Math 2.1:

We are continuing our work deepening our understanding of place value. We will start by reviewing our skip counting skills then work on adding ten more and ten less. We will work on skip counting with numbers not starting at 0. (Ex. start at 44 and skip count by 10s... 44, 54, 64, 74 or I'm starting at 155. Skip count by 100s 155, 255, 355) We will also challenge our thinking by looking for patterns in sets of numbers that don't follow our known skip counting patterns. (Ex. 32, 35, 38, 41. What's my pattern? Adding 3!) Ideas for Practicing

Math 2.2:

We are continuing to strengthen our skills in adding fluently with numbers through 1,000. We will be looking at a variety of strategies including number bonds (or part/part/wholes), base ten blocks, totals below, and the traditional algorithm. Which method works best for you?

Math 3.1:

Students in 3.1 group are busy strengthening their skills in patterns of multiplication and division. This week we will focus on various skills to help us when we haven't built up our fluency of our facts yet. We will look at the distributive property to break larger facts up and the commutative property to help us with our flip flop facts!

Social Studies:

We are continuing our work on personal finance this week. Students will be engaged in learning topics of needs vs. wants, opportunity costs, goods and services, as well as saving vs. spending with real world applications. Talk to your learners about your own experiences with economics. What was it like applying for your first job? How do you decide when to save and when to spend? When was a time where you had an opportunity cost? Looking back, are you glad you stayed with your decision?
