What We're Learning:

Reading:

This week we will conclude our first look at nonfiction texts. We will be searching through for the main idea of our books as well as within passages and even pages. We will look at headings and subheadings to help us easily identify the main idea and retell facts we've learned. We are learning to identify the difference between a main idea and a topic.

Writing/Grammar:

In grammar, we will look at pronouns. We will look at when we want to use them in our writing or when we want to be a little clearer with our nouns and proper nouns.

In writing we will shift our focus to an information immersion. We will learn about what makes informational writing different from narratives as well as how to make the best informational piece possible! We will learn how not to plagiarize and use our own words to express the information we've learned. We will begin a project on animal research that will be student selected for our first informational writing project!

Spelling will focus on reviewing the tricky ending /k/ sound. Is it k, ck, or ke??

Math 2.1:

We will being our journey into subtraction this week! We know that addition and subtraction are related, so we will look at how we can apply those same strategies we've learned in addition to help us solve subtraction!

Using a number line

using base ten blocks

expanded form

Just like in addition, we will expose our learners to all of these different strategies in hopes they find one that makes sense for their learning style. We will continue to develop our thinking of these numbers and what regrouping means before trying the often abstract traditional method. That is the goal as it is often most efficient for us, however, we want to focus on building strong, number sense in our young mathematicians! Be sure to check seesaw for lots of examples of what your kiddos are working on! These strategies may look confusing to you, but let them teach you!

Math 2.2:

This week we continue to work on building arrays! We will use these to help us organize our data for repeated addition problems. These will be a precursor to multiplication. What arrays can you find in real life?

Math 3.1:

We've been working on input-output tables over the last few days and have noticed that we are needing to know our facts more and more. Please continue to practice these through xtra math, abcya, flashcards, and more!

This week we will continue to apply our math basics with complicated logic puzzles. We will look at a variety of them to help locate what is the key information and how I can organize it. We will work on complicated multi-step word problems over the next few weeks and these logic puzzles will be sure to help!

Social Studies

We've learned a lot about present day Georgia this week and all the amazing things our regions have to offer with all of it's diversity. This has caused us to wonder, what was Georgia like in the beginning? Who were the first settlers? Where did they settle?
