What We're Learning-

Reading

Week's Theme: Choose to be kind even when others are not.

Literacy Skill Focus Standard:

RL2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

RL2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures.

Essential Question:

*How can a character's traits help to determine how they will handle difficult situations?

Comprehension Skill: Inferring and synthesizing

Comprehension Strategy: Look for a pattern to determine character traits

ELA:

Mentor Sentence: This week, we will be reinforcing compound words using the award winning book, The Polar Express.

Phonics: This week, we will be working on -ed and -ing endings. Students will be tasked with understanding past and present tense verbs and special rules that apply when spelling them. For example, if the word has a short vowel and a consonant at the end, you will double the consonant so it has a friend.

Math

Math 2.1

This week we will begin unit 3. Second graders are transitioning from measuring lengths with informal units to measuring with these standard units: inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. The measure of length is a count of how many units are needed to match the length of the object or distance being measured. Students have to understand what a length unit is and how it is used to find a measurement. To start our journey, we will review measurement using nonstandard units. How many candy canes long is the table? How many pieces of gelt does it take to measure the chair?

Math 2.2

This week, students will continue to work with categorical data by organizing, representing and interpreting data using four categories. As students continue to develop their use of reading and interpreting data, we will be constructing our own models by gathering data throughout the classroom and school and representing this data with both bar graphs and pictorial graphs.

Math 3.1

This week, students will connect their understanding of fractions to measuring to one-half and one-quarter inch. Students will have many opportunities measuring the length of various objects in their environment. This will provide a context for students to work with fractions by measuring objects to a quarter of an inch. Example: Measure objects in your table bucket to the nearest ½ or ¼ of an inch, display data collected on a line plot. How many objects measured ¼? ½? etc. …

Health:

This week we will use effective communication skills to enhance personal, family, and community health. Second grade students will demonstrate the ability to identify verbal and non- verbal communication skills as a way to reduce or avoid conflict. Examples include:

*Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants, and feelings.

*Demonstrate empathy for others.

*Demonstrate listening skills to enhance health.

*Demonstrate techniques of effective listening.
