What we are learning

As Readers this week we are looking starting to focus our attention on non-fiction text. This week our readers will continue to collect facts in our texts. We will look for facts that inspire us or make us wonder further! We will continue to do this with texts we've previously read and make connections to our science studies. We are so excited to identify some nonfiction text features and explore what makes them different from our fiction stories we have been focused on.

Key Questions:

How do plants grow and change?

Describe 3 different ways the author tells us that seeds can scatter and begin to grow?

What does the author want us to learn from this book?

What facts from this text really stood out to you?

How does this picture/illustration/graphic help us understand better?

What is the big idea of this text?

ELA:

Mentor Sentences: We will continue our work studying adjectives. We will deepen our understanding using our mentor text Next Time You See a Sunset and challenging ourselves with shades of meaning. We will be looking at expanding our vocabulary this week

Phonics: CK and Double endings such as pack, neck, press, grill, troll, staff, buzz, toss, cuff, fizz, sniff, duck

Here is a rule that works most of the time to help you with the trick ck or k memorizing

Writing: We will work to create our own "How To" piece on planting a seed. Students will work on this project and work through the writing process of brainstorming, rough draft, editing and revising, and some may even get to publish to Seesaw!

Math 2.1:

We are venturing our way into addition strategies this week! We will look at introducing these using single digit addition to help strengthen our understanding as junior mathematicians. We will work on reviewing/learning our doubles facts to help us learn our near doubles facts (ex. If I know 5+5=10, I know 5+6=11 because it is one more!) We will also look at the counting on strategy as well as making ten, which will help support our foundation for our base ten number system.

Math 2.2

This week we will dive head first into the wonderful world of geometry! We already have a lot of background knowledge on shapes, so we're going to challenge our thinking by identifying attributes to help us classify our shapes better. We are going to be working on some complex vocabulary such as polygons, quadrilaterals, parallel, vertices, angles, and more!

Math 3.1

This week we are so excited to begin our exploration of multiplication! Students already have a good base and know many facts, but we'll be deconstructing these seemingly "simple" problems to help us build the foundation for trickier problems in the future. We'll spend a lot of time on identifying multiplication problems as equal groups and repeated addition facts. We'll also work on identifying arrays to help us keep our information organized!

Science:

We are continuing our work as junior botanists this week exploring an even deeper look at our plants. We will work to identify the inside parts of a plant as well as looking at the germination of a seed. We will continue to explore seeds and seed dispersal and also look to work with pollination! Plants allow us such a hands on opportunity to explore and wonder about so many things! We love to share this with you, so check in our journals and on Seesaw for some fun explorations.
