What We're Learning-
Reading

Week's Theme: Choose to be kind even when others are not.
Literacy Skill Focus Standard:
RL2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
RL2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story by different authors or from different cultures.
Essential Question:
*How can a character's traits help to determine how they will handle difficult situations?
Comprehension Skill: Inferring and synthesizing
Comprehension Strategy: Look for a pattern to determine character traits
ELA:

Mentor Sentence: This week, we will be reinforcing compound words using the award winning book, The Polar Express.
Phonics: This week, we will be working on compound words. Students will be working to understand that compound words consist of two complete words that when combined, have a new meaning.
Math
Math 2.1
This week we will be continuing our study of measurement. We will be digging deeper to further our understanding by connecting the whole-number units on rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks and measuring tapes to number lines showing whole-number units starting at 0. Using these measuring tools to model different representations for whole-number sums and differences less than or equal to 100 using the numbers 0 to 100. We will also use the meter stick to view units of ten (10 cm) and hundred (100 cm), and to skip count by 5s and 10s. We will practice one- and two-step word problems that include different lengths measured with the same unit (inches, feet, centimeters, and meters).
Math 2.2
This week, students will begin reviewing all the second grade standards they have learned to prepare for their first third grade unit. We will be focusing on all foundational skills that will help us become successful mathematicians. We will review addition and subtraction strategies, data and graphing, and place value.
Math 3.1
This week, students will practice solving two-step word problems using a variety of four operations-addidtion, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They will be tasked with both determining which operations are to be used and representing these problems using equations that include a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Students will gain a full understanding of which operation to use in any given situation through contextual problems.
Social Studies:
This week we will explore Holidays and family traditions from around the World as an engaging way to introduce students to diverse cultures, give them a global perspective, and help them make ELA and social studies connections!
