English/ Language Arts

Mentor Sentence: This week, we will be reviewing past tense verbs with a focus on past tense irregular verbs. We will be using our mentor text for the week 100th Day Worries
Phonics: This week will will be focusing on ar words. Students may be familiar with hearing this known as 'Bossy R' eg. star, far, kart, start, etc.
Math
Math 2.1
This week we will be reviewing and preparing students to show what they know. Second grade will begin testing on Thursday and Friday depending on individual teachers' class and readiness.
Key topics covered
Measuring in inches, yard, and feet. Determining what tool would work best.
Addition and subtraction word problems using measurement
eg. Harry is 46 inches tall and Zander is 38 inches tall. How much taller is Harry than Zander.
Time- Measuring in the hour, and five minute. Students find the times within the quarter till the hour the most challenging using an analog clock; eg. 12:55
Graphing- Students will review bar graphs, and line plots and reading data to answer questions.
Math 2.2
This week we will begin our first third grade unit, which will allow us to expand our knowledge of three digit numbers with a review of place value and addition and subtraction. We will expand this by looking deeper at word problems and include multi step equations.
Math 3.1
Students will be preparing to show what they know and test this week. Students will be reviewing:
Area models are related to addition and multiplication.
Area covers a certain amount of space using square units. When finding the area of a rectangle, the dimensions represent the factors in a multiplication problem.
●Multiplication used to find area of rectangles with whole numbers
● Area models of rectangles and squares are directly related to the commutative property of multiplication.
● Rearranging an area such as 24 sq. units based on its dimensions or factors does NOT change the amount of area being covered (Van de Walle, pg 234). Ex. A 3 x 8 is the same area as a 4 x 6, 2 x12, and a 1 x 24.
● A product can have more than two factors.
● Area in measurement is equivalent to the product in multiplication.
● Area models can be used as a strategy for solving multiplication problems.
● Some word problems may require two or more operations to find the solution

We are loving the powerful discussions we've been having with our civil rights discussions. We' will look in depth at the work and injustice Martin Luther King Jr. faced and worked hard to eradicate.
